Growing intolerance for free speech is strangling the essence of political cartooning. Today, cartoonists from every corner of the world are targets of violence. In the first half of 2007, as many cartoonists were attacked and jailed as in all of 2006. Cartoonists are forced into self censorship by both their governments and by militant religious interests. Globalization has widened audiences, but it has also opened the door to militant threats against individual cartoonists.
